23443-474 ABSTRACT A process for the preparation of an alkyl polygly- coside containing an alkyl group of 8 to 24 carbon atoms is disclosed. The process comprises the step of glycosylation of a saccharide with a short-chain alcohol having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, in the presence of an acid catalyst, followed by the step of transglycosylation of the product so obtained with a long-chain alcohol having 8 to 24 carbon atoms. According to the invention, the glycosylation is carried out in an evaporator, at an average acid number of from about 1 to about 10 mg of KOH per gram of the reaction mixture and at a temperature of the reaction mixture of from about 60°C to about 160°C. The separation of water during the glycosylation reduces the thermal stress and damages to the product due to acid hydrolysis, resulting in alkyl poly- glycosides of improved colour.
