ABSTRACT The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a metal oxide and a synthesis gas from a metal chloride, wherein the synthesis gas is a mixture of gases containing hydrogen chloride and carbon dioxide for the synthesis of vinyl chloride, and wherein the metal chloride is converted by means of hydropyrolysis in the presence of carbon at an elevated temperature generated by the combustion of a fuel low in hydrogen, characterized in that heat required for the hydropyrolysis is obtained from the combustion of a uni- form misture of coke and the metal chloride with oxygen or air. The method provides a synthesis gas containing hydrogen chloride and carbon dioxide in an economical manner, i.e. with a low consumption of raw material and primary energy end a low proportion of unusable waste materials.
