ABSTRACT A process for the preparation of modified phenol resols is disclosed. The process comprises incorporating polyhydroxy modifiers into the starting materials for the resol resin preparation. The modifiers are selected from the group comprising monosaccharides, disaccharides, sugar alcohols, urea/formaldehyde condensates and mixtures thereof. The modified phenol resols are useful for the preparation of thermosetting foams, in particular for the insertion of flowers, which foams are biodegradable.
