ABSTRACT A process for the preparation of an N-substituted aminomethylphosphonic acid represented by the formula: Image wherein R3 and R11 are defined hereinafter, the product otherwise comprising a mixture of Image and Image wherein R3, R4, R11 and R21 are as defined hereinafter, comprising reacting a 2,5-diketopiperazine compound with phosphorous acid and formaldehyde in an acidic medium, said diketopiperazine compound represented by the formula: Image wherein, in the above formulae, R1, R2, R3 and R4 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, arylalkyl, and carboxylalkyl, provided that R3 and R4 are identical, and either R1 and R2 are identical, both R1 and R2 are hydrolyzable under acidic reaction conditions, or one of R1 and R2 is hydrogen and the other is hydrolyzable under acidic reaction conditions, R11 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and phosphonomethyl when R1 is either hydrogen or 2 group hydrolyzable under acidic action conditions, R11 otherwise being identical to R1, R21 being selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and phosphonomethyl when R2 is either hydrogen or a group hydrolyzable under acidic reaction conditions, R21 being otherwise identical to R2.
