Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to a process for producing new malonic esters of the general formula I, Image (I) which comprises reacting malonic acid derivatives having the general formula II Image (II) or the reactive derivatives, preferably halogenides thereof with phenol deri- vatives having the general formula III Image (III) or with the salts thereof, and optionally with compounds having the general formula IV Image (IV) or with the salt thereof in an optional order, optionally in more steps, wherein in all of the general formulae R is an optionally substituted C1-6 alkyl, an optionally substituted aromatic ring, a heterocyclic ring, a cyclo- alkyl group or a fused ring system, R1 stands for a hydrogen, a lower alkyl, an aralkyl optionally substituted with a halo or alkyl group, a substituted aromatic, cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic ring, X represents a halogen atom. It also relates to the new compounds of formula I and VII in which R, R1, X and Y are as defined above and R2 is a phenyl, thienyl, furyl, or pyridyl group, optionally substituted with a halogen atom, nitro, dialkylamino, alkoxy o - trifluoromethyl group. These compounds are valuable intermediates in the production of malonic amides, which can be utilized in various fields of organic chemistry where a primary amino group is to be selectively acylated, forming a peptide food, and when a further free carboxyl group is needed in the acylating moiety of the molecule.
