A novel process for the preparation of 2-substituted 5-chloroimidazole-4-carbaldehydes of the general formula: (see formula I) in which R denotes hydrogen, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an optionally substituted benzyl group or an optionally substituted phenyl group. The compounds (I) are important starting compounds for the preparation of hypotensive pharmaceuticals and herbicides.
