ABSTRACT The preparation of overbased alkaline earth metal sulphurised phenates by reacting the metal, a sulphurised phenol or phenol sulphur mixture a diol and an alcohol in oil over a controlled temperature cycle, introducing carbon dioxide to the mixture when the temperature is less than 140°C and the water present in the mixture has been reduced to below 0.3% by weight of the mixture. The compounds are useful in lubricating oils as detergent additives.
