A B S T R A C T There is provided a process for preparing 2-methyl substituted penems useful as antibacterial agents or as intermediates thereof which, comprises the reaction of an appropriate 1-imido,-3,4-disubstituted azetidinone derivative with a trivalent organophosphorus compound in an inert solvent at. a temperature of from 110 to 150°C for a period of from 2 hours to a few days.
