PRECIS DE LA DIVULGATION: La présente invention concerne un procédé de préparation de pentachlorophénol par chloration d'autres chlorophénols, notamment de dichlorophénols et de trichlorophénols. Plus précisément, la présente invention concerne un procédé de chloration par le chlore gazeux, de dichlorophénols et/ou de trichlorophénols, éventuellement en mélange avec des monochlorophénols, en pentachlorophénol, caractérisé en ce que la réaction est conduite: en présence d'une quantité efficace d'un halogénure de zirconium, d'hafnium, de tellure, d'antimoine, de nobium ou d'aluminium ou de l'un de leurs précurseurs, jusqu'à ce que l'on atteigne environ le stade tétrachlorophénol, puis en rajoutant une quantité efficace d'halogénure d'aluminium pour obtenir le pentachlorophénol. Le pentachlorophénol est un composé utilise comme fongicide et agent de conservation du bois.
