SMC 36118 Abstract Process For the Preparation of Polycyclic Dyes A process for the preparation of a polycyclic dye of the Formula (1): Image formula I by reacting a substituted acetic acid of the Formula (2): Image Formula 2 with a compound of the Formula (3): Image Formula 3 Abstract (cont'd) SMC 36118 and oxidation of the intermediate leuco compound to dehydrogenate the peripheral heterocyclic rings wherein Y is an optionally substituted aromatic or heteroaromatic radical; Ring A is unsubstituted or is substituted by from one to five groups; Z is -NR1R2; R1 and R2 are each independently H or are independently selected from optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl and heteroaryl; or R1 and R2 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a heterocyclic ring; or R1 ana R2 each independently together with the nitrogen to which they are attached and the adjacent carbon atom of Ring B form a heterocyclic ring; and X1 and X2 are each independently selected from H, halogen, optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted aryl, optionally substituted heteroaryl, cyano, carbamoyl, sulphamoyl, carboxylic acid and carboxylic acid ester, a process for the preparation of the substituted acetic acid of Formula (2) and certain novel substituted acetic acids of Formula (2).
