ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present disclosure is concerned with a process for the preparation of carboxylate containing polyurethane and the polymers so produced. Hydroxyl bearing components are reacted with tri- or tetra-carboxylic acid monoanhydrides so as to incorporate free carboxyl groups into the component, a proportion of the carboxyl groups are neutralized to ionic salts and the hydroxyl component is then reacted with poly- isocyanates and simultaneously or subsequently with chain extending agents. The polymer may be obtained as a dis- persion in water and the chain lengthening agent may be water, formaldehyde or water soluble amines or hydrazines.
