Polymers of carbon monoxide and one or more olefinically unsaturated compounds are prepared by contacting with a catalyst composition comprising a Group VIII metal and a compound of the general formula R1M1-R-M2R2 wherein M1 and M2 are chosen from sulphur, selenium and tellurium, R1 and R2 represent optionally polar-substituted hydrocarbyl groups and R represents a bivalent bridging group containing at least two carbon atoms in the bridge.
