Process for the preparation of polymers, characterized in that a mixture of carbon monoxide with one or more olefinically unsaturated compounds is polymerized by contacting the mixture at an elevated temperature and pressure with a solution of a palladium-containing catalyst composition in a diluent in which the polymers are insoluble or virtually insoluble, and in that, before the monomers are contacted with the catalyst solution, a solid matter is suspended in the diluent, in a quantity which is given by the formula a 100 x b x c, wherein a represents the number of grams of the solid matter per litre of diluent, b is the average particle size of the solid matter expressed in metres and c the bulk density of the solid matter expressed in kg/m3.
