The present invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of polymorphic forms of clopidogrel hydrogen sulfate, namely methyl (+)-(S)-.alpha.-(o-chlorophenyl)-6,7-dihydrotliieno [3,2-c] pyridine-5(4H)-acetate hydrogen sulfate of formula (I). Particularly the present invention relates to the process for the preparation of form (I) and amorphous clopidogrel hydrogen sulfate.
