ABSTRACT A process for producing magnesium oxide is provided. The process comprises reacting a starting material with hydrochloric acid to form a reaction mixture. After removal of residues from the reaction mixture, crude serpentine is added thereto forming precipitated contaminants. The precipitated contaminants are removed from the reaction mixture after which the reaction mixture is subjected to thermal decomposition thereby producing magnesium oxide and hydrogen chloride. The magnesium oxide and hydrogen chloride are subsequently separated and recovered. Suitable starting materials are selected from magnesium silicates and magnesium hydrosilicates. The process may be used to prepare relatively pure yields of magnesium oxide.
