ABSTRACT A process for the preparation of a compound of the formula Image in which R is hydrogen, alkoxy, alkylamino, dialkylamino, or optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, R1 is optionally substituted alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, monoalkylamino or dialkylamino, or is phenyl, R2 is optionally substituted alkyl, and X is oxygen or sulphur, comprising reacting a compound of the formula Image in which R3 is optionally substituted benzyl, with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, in the presence of an acid acceptor and in the presence of a diluent, at temperatures between 20°C and 150°C, to give a compound of the formula Image and then in a second step reacting that with a compound of the formula Image in which Hal is halogen.
