Abstract of the Disclosure l-Substituted-6-fluoro-7-(1-piperazinyl or 4- substituted-l-piperazinyl)-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline- 3-carboxylic acids having the general formula: Image wherein R1 is an ethyl or vinyl group and R4 is Image in which R3 is hydrogen or a lower alkyl group, are prepared by hydrolyzing a compound of the general formula Image wherein R2 is a lower alkyl group, R1 and R4 having the aforesaid meanings. The quinoline carboxylic acid derivatives thus obtained are useful antimicrobial agents.
