23221-4452 Abstract A novel process is provided for synthesizing tetrasubstituted 2,2-bis(phenyl)hexafluoropropanes. Starting from hexafluorobisphenol A the first step can be either nitration to the 3,3'-dinitro compound, followed by introducing the 4,4'- hydroxyl groups substituted with suitable leaving groups, or vice versa. The intermediates thus obtained are suitable substrates for displacement of the derivatized hydroxyl groups by a variety of nucleophiles, leading to novel tetra substituted 2,2-bis- (phenyl)hexafluoropropanes, having nitro or amino groups in the 3- and 3'-position, and primary or secondary amine or mercaptan radicals in the 4-and 4'-position. These partly fluorinated aromatic compounds are valuable monomers for preparing polymers like polybenzimidazoles or polybenzothiazoles.
