- 17 - A B S T R A C T PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF SELF-CROSS-LINKING RESINOUS BINDERS, THERMOSETTING COMPOSITIONS AND THEIR USE IN COATING SURFACES Catalytically self-cross-linking resinous binders are pre- pared by (A) addition reaction of a primary amine to a beta-hy- droxyalkyl ester of an alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated acid, and (B) reaction of this secondary amine adduct, optionally in combination with other amines, with an epoxy resin. Thermosetting compositions include the binders and transesterification-promoting metal compounds as curing catalysts. Protonized binders can be used in a cathodic electrodeposition bath. The composition is applied to a surface and the resulting coating cured at tempera- tures not higher than 200°C.
