A process is described for the preparation of hydroxybenzylphosphonates of the formula I Image (I) which involves Image A) reacting a phenol of the formula II with an amine of the formula III (II) Image , formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde and a protonic acid HnA to give a salt of the(III) formula IV Image , (IV) B) distilling off the water of reaction which forms, and C) reacting the reaction mixture, or the salt IV isolated therefrom, with a trialkyl phosphite of the formula Image (V) in which HnA is an organic or inorganic acid having n protons, nis 1,2,30r4, R1 and R2 independently of one another are C1-C12 alkyl or C5-C7 cycloalkyl, R3 and R4 independently of one another are C1-C12 alkyl or form, together with the nitrogen atom attached to them, a piperidyl or morpholinyl radical, and R5, R6 and R7 independently of one another are C1-C4 alkyl. The compounds of the formula I can be reacted with a base M(OH)m (m = 1 or 2) to give salts of the formula Ia Image (Ia) which are, if desired (M = alkali metal or ammonium; m = 1), reacted with salts of alkaline earth metals to give salts of the formula Ia in which M is alkaline earth metal and m is 2. The compounds of the formulae I and Ia are suitable, for example, as processing stabilizers for plastics.
