ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of methyl ter-butyl ether by reacting isobutylene with methanol characterized in that isobutylene is fed in a C4 olefinic stream with methanol to a primary reaction zone at a temperature of from 50 to 90°C and at a pressure of from 10 to 30 atm., in the presence of an acid ion exchange resin, as catalyst, wherein isobutylene partially reacts with methanol transforming into ether, the ether formed is separated by distillation from the residual isobutylene and methanol and from all other hydrocar- bons of the C4 olefinic stream, all the residual compounds being fed to a secondary reaction zone wherein the reaction is carried out in liquid phase at a temperature of from 60°C to 100°C and pressure of from 15 to 40 atm in the presence of an acid macroreticular resin, as catalyst, and the ether produced is subsequently removed by distillation from the other hydrocarbons of the stream which in such a way results practically without isobutylene. Besides obtaining the desired ether with very high conversions, the process object of the present invention permits to lower the amount of isobutylene to levels lower than 2%.
