ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Actinide dioxides (e.g. uranium dioxide) prepared by reacting the actinide nitrate hexahydrate with sodium dithionite and then heating in the absence of an oxygen-containing atmos- phere to give the actinide dioxides. This process permite direct conversion to dioxides without the need of complex purification steps which would otherwise be required after the metal has keen extracted from the ores and converted to nitrate hexahydrate.
