ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A new process is disclosed for the production of 1-(aminomethyl)cyclohexane acetic acid, which is a pharmaceutical agent having anticonvulsant activity. In the process, a (1-cyanocyclohexyl)malonic acid dialkyl ester is decarbalkoxylated to form the corresponding (1- cyanocyclohexyl)acetic acid alkyl ester, then transesterified with a benzyl alcohol and finally hydrogenated to form the desired end product. Also disclosed are novel intermediates of the formula: Image (VII) in which R2 is alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a benzyl radical of the general formula: Image (VIII) in which R1 represents hydrogen, an alkoxy group, a nitro group or halogen.
