Abstract of the Disclosure The invention relates to the preparation of 2,3-dichloropropionitrile by chlorinating acrylonitrile with chlorine in the liquid phase in the presence of pyridine or an alkylpyridine in combination with an alkaline earth metal carbonate. Presence of the alkaline earth metal carbonate permits use of only a small quantity of pyridine, with consequent economic and operational benefits.
