ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Process for the production of 3,3-dimethylglutaric acid from isophorone. The isophorone is treated with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a strong acid at a temperature of 10° to 80°C. The preferred acid is sulfuric acid, and the reaction is preferably conducted at a temperature of 20° to 50°C. Preferably the molar ratio of isophorone to hydrogen peroxide to strong acid is 1:4 to 8:4 to 8.
