A process is disclosed for producing 4,5- dichloro-6-ethylpyrimidine, which comprises condensing a 2- chloro-3-oxopentanoic acid alkyl ester with a formamidinium salt in the presence of a base and a polar, protic solvent to form a 5-chloro-6-ethyl-4-hydroxypyrimidine. The latter is then converted with phosphoryl chloride to form 4, 5- dichloro-6-ethylpyrimidine. The product is useful as an intermediate in the manufacture of insecticidal, acaricidal and fungicidal 4-amino-5-chloro-6-ethylpyrimidines.
