ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A standardized preparation of intestinal origin is provided herein for the prophylaxis of intestinal disturbances, especially salmon- ella infections, in poultry. At least two bacterial strains of normal alimentary tract (i.e. intestinal origin) bacterial species are anaero- bically cultivated either separately or together according to known methods, after which the cultivated bacteria are isolated from the nutri- ent medium and finished to a preparation, e.g., by lyophilization. The cultivation may take place in the presence of epithelial cells from the alimentary tract, for example, the crop of a poult. The bacterial strains used for the cultivation of the preparation are essentially those whose adhesion efficiency onto the epithelial cells of the alimentary tract of the poult has proved to be at least 10 bacteria per epithelial cell. In this way improvements are provided in bacterial preparations useful in preventing infection in young poultry. In addition, chicks treated with such preparation display an improvement in health and faster growth.
