ABSTRACT A process for the production of a multi-coloured floor covering. A process for the production of a floor covering having a lower layer of polymer material that penetrates through the upper layer in surface areas distributed in a pattern, in which the upper and the lower layer are pressed together and bonded so as to form one structure and in which the upper layer in the above mentioned surface areas is removed, characterized in that the upper layer is manufactured from a material which in the conditions of the press exhibits a greater viscosity of flow than the material used in the lower layer, removal of the upper layer in the surface areas is carried out before the upper layer is pressed onto the lower layer and the pressing process is performed so that the surface areas are completely filled and the whole is consolidated. The floor covering produced may have a coloured pattern of selected configuration while the inherent strength of the covering is not reduced. Round or polygonal shapes may be employed, although pictograms are preferred since these can be of an advertising or instructional nature.
