ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a process for the production of alkoxy methylene malonic acid nitriles by reacting orthoformic acid trialkyl esters with compounds containing reactive methylene groups in the presence of catalysts, wherein malonic acid nitriles are used as the compounds containing reactive methylene groups and the reaction is carried out with an excess of at least 1.6 mole of orthoformic acid esters in the presence of a catalyst from the group comprising aliphatic carboxylic acid or their anhydrides, aromatic sulphonic acids, alco- holates and alkanolamines. The products obtained thereby are intermediate products for the production of pharmaceu- tically active pyrimidine derivatives, for example, allopurinol.
