ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for the production of alpha-silicon nitride powder by reductive nitridation of silicon dioxide. An amorphous silicon dioxide is used which results from the production of aluminum fluoride from hexafluorosilicic acid and aluminum hydroxide. The alpha- silicon nitride powder prepared contains less than 5 percent of beta-modification and has very low oxygen, carbon and metal contents. Depending on the reaction conditions, primary particle sizes below 1 micron or coarser particles of up to 50 microns are obtained.
