The present invention relates to a process for the production of amino acids. In particular the process relates to the production of enantiomer-enriched amino acids, in which compounds of the formula (I) Image wherein X = O, NH, R1 = CH 3, CH 3 CH 2, tert-butyl, benzyl, wherein in the case where X is NH then R 1 may be H, R 2 denotes the .alpha.-radical of a natural or synthetic amino acid, are reacted with an enzyme exhibiting N-acetylamino acid racemase (AAR) activity in the presence of or subsequently with an enzyme exhibiting amino acid acylase activity. Use of the amino acids obtained by means of this reaction.
