ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the production of mixtures of amphoteric surface-active imidazoline derivatives primarily containing compounds corresponding to formula I Image (I) in which R1 is a C5-21 alkyl radical, B is a C2-4 aminoalkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical and D is an -R2-COOM group wherein R2 is a C1-14 alkylene radical or a C2-4 alkenylene radical and M represents H, NH4 or alkali metal, comprising A) hydrolyzing an imidazoline corresponding to formula II (II) Image with water in a molar ratio of 1:8 to 1:20 over a period of 1 to 24 hours at 50 to 130°C under atmospheric pressure or at a slight excess pressure to form a mixture of amidoamines, B) alkylating the resulting amidoamine mixture with an alkylating agent corresponding to the formula X - D, in which X is halogen or a hydrogen atom and D is as defined above, and C) hydrolyzing the excess alkylating agent at 80 to 95°C and at pH 10 to 11.5, as measured in a 10% by weight aqueous solution of the reaction mixture.
