ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE .beta.-carbolines of formula 1 Image ( I ), wherein R = C1-5 alkyl, R4 = H, C1-5 alkyl or -(CH2)n-OR with n = 1 or 2 and RA = H, R, (CHR)n-OR, OCH2Ph, OPh, OPh(Cl,Br), OR, OCH2Ph(Cl,Br) NRR, Cl or Br, wherein n and R have the above meanings and there are one or two RA's are prepared, by dehydrogenation at reaction temperatures below ambient temperature in an inert solvent with tert-butyl hypochlorite and a tertiary amine.
