This invention relates to a process for the selective synthesis of silylalkyldisulphide (I) by desulphurisation of the corresponding polysulphides (II) using neucleophilic reagents (III), (IV) or (V). (R1R~R3SiR4)2S2 (I) (R1R~R3SiR4)2Sn (II) M+CN- (III) M+2SO3~- (IV) R5R6R7P (V) R1, R~, R3, R5, R6 and R7, independently, represent C1-8 alkyl or alkoxy or monovalent aryl, R4 represents C1-8 divalent alkylidene or -CH2-Ph-CH2, n is 3 to 20, and M+ represents an alkali metal cation, a substituted or unsubstituted ammonium cation, or half an alkaline earth metal ion or zinc cation.
