ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In case where a mixture of methyl formate and methanol is heated in the presence of an alkali metal catalyst other than alkali metal alcoholates, whereby methyl formate is pyrolytically decomposed to produce carbon monoxide, even if a concentration of methyl formate is increased more than 70 wt.%, an amount of by-product hydrogen is not so much to the extent interfering with practical use of carbon monoxide, and consequently, carbon monoxide of high purity can easily and effectively be obtained, besides activity of the catalyst used can be maintained for a long period of time.
