ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the production of carboxylic acid chlorides of aromatic nitrogen heterocyclic compounds of the general formulae: Image I II III by chlorination of the corresponding hydroxy carboxylic acids of aromatic nitrogen heterocyclic compounds of the general formulae: Image IV V VI is described, wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7 and R8 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom. The chlorination is performed with a solution of phosphorous pentachloride in phosphoroxy chloride and the excess phosphorous pentachloride is converted into phosphoroxy chloride either with a C1-C4- carboxylic acid or with a silane of the general formula: (CH3)3-Si-OR9 VII The product according to one of the general formulae I to III is then isolated,
