ABSTRACT A process for the production of a catalyst for the hydration of olefins having 2 - 3 carbon atoms to the corresponding alcohols by impregnating a carrier with phosphoric acid, which, at a total water content of 20 - 35% was formed by pressing, calcinated at 500 - 800°C and finally subjected to an acid treatment in order to reduce the Al2O3 content to 1 - 5% by weight, preferrably 1 - 3% by weight, in which connection, if necessary, prior to forming 5 - 15% by weight, related to the total dry substance, of one or more oxides of the metals of the VI sub-group of the periodic system were added to the carrier, characterized in that an artificial aluminium silicate obtained by the precipitation of soluble salts of aluminium and silicic acid was used, of which a weight ratio Al2O3: SiO2 amounts to 1 : 5 to 1 : 7 and of which the specific surface amounts to 350 - 450 m2/g and in which the surface falls to 280 - 380 m2/g because of acid treatment and the pore volume is raised by 1.1 to 1.3 m1/g.
