ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a process for the production of cellulose ethers that contain tertiary or quaternary nitrogen by the conversion of alkylene epoxides with cellulose or its derivatives in alkaline medium in the presence of water. As the cationisation agent, alkylene epoxides or mixtures of these of the general formula Image (I) or preferably (II) Image are employed wherein n = 1, 2, or 3, in particular 1, R1, R2, and R3 stand for the same or different alkyl radicals with 1 to 18 carbon atoms or R1 = benzyl radical or C2H4OH, and x- chloride, bromide, sulfate, or acetate.
