ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel process for the production of chlorine from magnesium chloride is provided. It includes the step of reacting a partially hydrated magnesium chloride, e.g., having a water content of up to 16% by weight, at a temperature of 500 - 700°C with a gaseous stream having an oxygen content of at least 20%. In this way, a gaseous product is produced containing chlorine and hydrogen chloride, and a solid product is produced consisting essentially of magnesia.
