ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for the production of crotonobetaine hydrochloride, which is a starting product in the microbiological production of L-carnitine. In the process, carnitine hydrochloride in its racemic form or in the form of its enantiomers is reacted at elevated temperature with acetic anhydride in the presence of an acid catalyst.
