ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for the production of R,S- 2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid by reacting isobutylene oxide and a phosphonoacetic acid trialkyl ester. The R,S-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid-C1- C4 alkyl ester thus formed is then hydrolyzed to form the corresponding acid. R,S-2,2-Dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid is an important intermediate product in the production of S-(+)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxamide.
