ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Earth alkali metal salts of 2-pyrrolidon-5-carboxylic acid (pyroglutamic acid) are produced by heating the corresponding earth alkali metal salt of the glutamic acid, while retaining the solid state, to a temperature in the range from 120 to 250°C, until the reaction water of the intramolecular condensation (cyclocondensation) has been completely driven off.
