ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This specification discloses a process and apparatus for the production of a gaseous mixture containing substantial amounts of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The process involves three reactant materials comprising (a) a primary fuel of a solid, liquid or gaseous nature, or a mixture of two or more of these, (b) an oxidising gas, usually oxygen, air or oxygen enriched air, and (c) a secondary fuel which is preferably gaseous. These reactant materials are fed continuously into a cylindrically symmetrical combustion chamber in the following sequence of events. Firstly the oxidising gas and primary fuel are blended together to produce a gas like mixture with the essential property of compressibility. The gas-like mixture is caused to assume a highly turbulent, compact and self- contained configuration such as by subjecting it to swirl. In this configuration, the gas-like mixture is ignited to produce a self-contained total combustion zone. If the primary fuel is a liquid or solid, complete gasification of the mineral free portion of the primary fuel occurs. The secondary fuel is then mixed with the hot gaseous products of the total combustion zone to react with same to produce substantial amounts of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The secondary fuel is preferably introduced into the combustion chamber so that it forms a sheath around the total combustion zone, said sheath being in direct physical contact with the total combustion zone. The first two sequence of events are achieved by a specially designed burner having primary fuel input means and oxidising gas input means with at least the oxidising gas input means being designed to cause the gas-like mixture to swirl to create the highly turbulent, compact and self- contained configuration. The specification discloses three forms of apparatus suitable for use with (a) diesel oil as the primary fuel and towns gas as the secondary fuel, (b) liquified petroleum gas as the primary and secondary fuels and (c)a particulate coal/water slurry as the primary fuel and towns gas as the secondary fuel. - 1 -
