ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The present invention relates to a process for the produc- tion of grained abrasives from highly refractory inorganic hard materials with improved grain toughness, which is distinguished by the fact that a material in lump or block form, obtained by known processes for producing a finely cristalline internal struc- ture, is size-reduced and the grains subjected to grading by grind- ing in a ball mill or tube mill in such a way that essentially only the porous, faulty or coarsely crystalline grains are size- reduced and separated off from the rest of the material. The pro- cess according to the invention is particularly suitable for im- proving the grain toughness of grained finely crystalline abra- sives of the type obtained by melting aluminium oxide and/or bauxite or by melting zirconium oxide and/or Baddeleyite with pure aluminium oxide and/or bauxite, the zirconium oxide content amounting to between 0 and 60% by weight and preferably to between 20 to 45% by weight.
