Disclosed is a process for the production of an oxo alcohol having 7 to 18 C atoms by hydroformylation of the corresponding olefin with synthesis gas in the presence of an organic phase containing a cobalt catalyst at 50 to 220°C and a pressure from 100 to 400 bar, and subsequent hydrogenation of the aldehydes. The cobalt catalyst is formed by reacting an aqueous cobalt salt solution in the presence of an organic solvent which is only slightly miscible with water or not at all, with synthesis gas, and the organic phase containing the cobalt catalyst is obtained by extraction of the cobalt catalyst formed from the aqueous phase by means of an organic extractant which is only slightly miscible with water or not at all. The formation of the cobalt catalyst, the extraction of the cobalt catalyst formed into the organic phase and the hydroformylation of the corresponding olefins are carried out in a single-stage process. The oxo alcohol produced may be used for the production of a carboxylic acid ester useful as plasticizer for plastics.
