A process for polymerizing one or more olefins by reacting one or more alpha olefins having 2 to 12 carbon atoms, optionally a diene, and hydrogen, under polymerization conditions, in the presence of a catalyst system of: (A) a transition metal catalyst comprising a vanadium compound precipitated within a liquid hydrocarbon by reduction reaction of vanadium on a spherical support of magnesium chloride; and (B) a cocatalyst-promoter combination wherein the cocatalyst is an aluminum alkyl, an alkylaluminum halide and the promoter is an organic compound of strong chlorine donating capability.
