The invention provides a process and apparatus for production of hydrogen by thermal decomposition of water. In accordance with the invention, centrifugal forces are applied to water vapour which has been subjected to temperatures sufficient to dissociate oxygen and hydrogen. The dissociated hydrogen thereby separated is preferentially withdrawn from the reactor, driving a further equilibrium shift towards dissociation to improve the efficiency of hydrogen collection. In one embodiment, centrifugal forces may also be used to improve the transfer of heat to the water vapour to facilitate dissociation.
