A B S T R A C T A gas containing hydrogen, carbonmonoxide and light hydrocarbons is produced from a hydrocarbon(s)- containing fuel by introducing at least 50% of the fuel in a cracking zone for contacting the fuel with hot gas from a partial combustion process which process is fed with the residue of the cracking process and remaining fuel, if any.
