ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Hydrophobic compositions and a process for preparing the same are provided. The compositions are prepared by mixing an aqueous suspension of finely divided solids, the solids being substantially insoluble in water but being capable of being wetted with water, the aqueous suspension containing dissolved salts of metals with an aqueous solution of alkali metal organosiliconates, the metal salt being used in an amount of from 1.0 to 2 equivalents of metal per equivalent of alkali metal in the organosiliconates. By this procedure, there is formed substantially water insoluble metal organosilicon- ates which are suitable for use as fillers for molded objects or coatings made of thermoplastic resins, as components for fire extinguishing powders, as thickeners for liquids, or for eliminating mineral oils and mineral oil products from bodies of water.
