ABSTRACT A process for producing a compound of the formula: Image (I) wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or an aralkyl group, and R2 is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl-protecting group, or a salt thereof, which comprises removing from a compound of the formula: Image (II) wherein R3 is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl-protecting group, R4 and R5 which may be the same or different are N-protecting groups selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl groups and aralkyl groups, and X? is an anion, the N-protecting group(s), if necessary, together with the hydroxyl-protecting group.
